PROGRAM

Shostakovich: Cello Concerto No. 1
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 6

Legendary cellist Yo-Yo Ma—“the best-known, most versatile music soloist in the world” (Washington Post)— joins the FSO for an unforgettable all-Shostakovich program celebrating the 120th anniversary of the composer’s birth during the 25/26 season. Ma performs the
Cello Concerto No. 1, a bold and emotionally charged work that highlights his extraordinary artistry. With 19 GRAMMY Awards and over 120 albums, Ma’s career embodies the power of music to connect and uplift.

The FSO also performs Shostakovich’s deeply expressive Symphony No. 6, a work that echoed the struggles and spirit of a turbulent era. Don’t miss this historic musical tribute.

This special performance is a co-presentation with the Center for the Arts at George Mason University and made possible in part with support from the McKeever Legacy Fund.

Ma is that rarest of players...whose mastery and influence are so all-encompassing that he casts a shadow across the very concept of the instrument itself.
