PROGRAM
Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2
                  Claire Huangci, piano

Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5

Pianist Claire Huangci has captivated audiences since her artistic breakthrough in 2009 when she won first prize at the International Chopin Competition in Darmstadt, as well as in 2010 at the Chopin Competition in Miami. “It’s gratifying to have followed Huangci’s progression from a young prodigy to an artist poised for greatness” (Gramophone Magazine).

The symphonic highlight of the evening is Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony; its brilliant premiere was a sensational success with an ovation applause that lasted well over half an hour.  “As the storm of applause shook the columns of the concert hall,” the reviewer wrote, “the conductor lifted the score above his head to make it clear this ovation was not owed to him, but the creator of the music—Shostakovich.”
